National Pescatarian Month History

History of National Pescatarian Month

Before we dig deeper into the pescatarian lifestyle and its benefits, it might be helpful to understand where this practice comes from. The word pescatarian is a neologism combining the Italian word for fish (pesce) with the English word vegetarian. While the term may be a modern invention, the concept of pescatarianism goes back thousands of years. Among the earliest known vegetarians in written history were the Pythagoreans, who took their name from the great Greek philosopher, Pythagoras. They were believed to have subscribed to a meatless diet, but it is strongly suspected that they also ate fish, which would make them some of our first unofficial pescatarians.

Throughout the centuries, many other groups adopted a pescatarian-style diet – some by choice, others by necessity. Famously, the Benedictine monks of the Middle Ages abstained from meat but not from fish until at least the 14th century. Other religious orders over time also abstained from meat, qualifying them as pescatarians as well.

The modern vegetarian movement in the U.S. has been around since the mid-19th century. It was adopted by certain social and religious organizations and even linked to prominent abolitionists and suffragists. It was not until the early 1990s, however, that the term pescatarian would enter the discussion, coined to describe a vegetarian who also eats fish.

The full-fledged pescatarian movement subsequently caught on alongside a noted rise in the popularity of vegetarian and vegan diets. In fact, the pescatarian diet – which features fish as its main source of protein – is sometimes viewed as a plausible transition diet on one’s way to the more-limiting end of the spectrum.

Pescatarianism has flourished over the last 25 years and is now a widely accepted dietary practice that’s fed by a profusion of cookbooks, online resources, and endorsements from its followers. Numerous celebrities, including actor David Duchovny, author Margaret Atwood, and musicians Billy Corgan, Amanda Palmer and Henry Rollins, have adopted the diet. So has renowned fitness trainer Jillian Michaels.

October is National Pescatarian Month, an opportunity to learn more about one of the most healthful, fulfilling and tasty lifestyle options available. But first, you may be asking, “What is a pescatarian?” Pescatarians consume seafood combined with a vegetarian diet. It’s a person who eliminates all meat from their diet with the exception of fish (like a vegetarian who still loves sushi or grilled salmon or shrimp!). Making up roughly 5% of the population, pescatarians follow a diet of seafood plus grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, dairy, fruit, veggies and eggs.

Experts say “going pescatarian” can augment your intake of vital nutrients (such as omega-3 fatty acids) and lead to numerous health benefits, including improved brain and heart health, protection against diabetes, decreased inflammation, and more. Despite its many benefits only about 5 percent of the population are pescatarians.

The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) sponsors National Pescatarian Month as a way to raise awareness about the benefits of a pescatarian diet, spread some fun tips on how to adopt a pescatarian lifestyle (for a few days, weeks, months, or even longer), and highlight all of the amazing ways fish and seafood can be an integral part of any diet or lifestyle. NFI has developed a number of resources for anyone who is pesca-curious including a newly-released e-cookbook, and tons of featured content on their popular Dish on Fish blog.

Listicles Down Syndrome Awareness Month 2021

5 Interesting Facts About Down Syndrome

  1. Society has changed for the better

In ancient times, infants with Down syndrome were often killed or abandoned. And even in modern times, many people with Down syndrome were institutionalized.

  2. Pregnancy testing can pinpoint Down syndrome

According to the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, "Down syndrome has nothing to do with race, nationality, socioeconomic status, religion, or anything the mother or father did during pregnancy." Mothers can learn through diagnostics tests during pregnancy whether or not their baby has Down syndrome.

  3. There are three types

Of the three types of Down syndrome — trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) is most prevalent. Translocation and mosaicism account for about 5 percent of cases combined.

  4. People with Down can live full, rich lives

An emphasis on education, a loving and stimulating home environment, and quality health care enable people with Down syndrome to have full and productive lives.

  5. Life expectancy is increasing

As reported by the Global Down Syndrome Foundation, "As recently as 1983, the average lifespan of a person with Down syndrome was 25 years. The dramatic increase is largely due to the end of the inhumane practice of institutionalizing people with Down syndrome."

Tip: Juicers Sales: Juicers Deals and Coupons October 2021

Down syndrome occurs across the human spectrum and is the most common chromosomal condition. Each year, about 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome — a 1 in 700 chance. The prevalence of Down syndrome increases with the mother’s age. It is associated with delays in physical growth, characteristic facial features and intellectual disability. In fact, the average IQ of an adult with Down syndrome is equivalent to that of an 8-year-old.

These are just facts, and like all facts, they can fail to provide a full picture. The truth is that children born with Down syndrome can absolutely go on to live happy and long lives. And with Down Syndrome Awareness Month every October, we can be inspired to learn more about this topic and to celebrate people born with Down syndrome and the medical advancements that increasingly improve their quality of life.

Now Hear This: 5 Facts About Your Ears

  1. Ears are always on

Even while you sleep, your ears are still at work. The only difference is since you’re unconscious, your brain isn’t processing those sounds you may be hearing.

  2. They’re made up of three bones

These three bones are small enough to be placed together on a penny.

  3. They’re on self-clean mode

Earwax helps keep your ears clean so you don’t have to.

  4. Fish and snakes can hear you

Though they don’t have ears, snakes use their jawbones to identify sounds while fish use ridges on their body to respond to pressure changes.

  5. Limited Hearing

If a sound goes higher than our natural hearing limit, all we’ll hear is a buzz. We don’t recommend you try it out.

Studies show one in five Americans older than 12 have experienced hearing loss in an ear. It can result from work-related noise exposure and leisure activities, such as sporting events or concerts. Since noise-induced hearing loss is permanent, it’s better to be proactive. While you don’t have to avoid all noise, maybe skip the front row concert tickets or opt for quiet “you” time instead.

National American Beer Day History

History of National American Beer Day

While the general history of beer places its beginnings as far back as approximately 7,000 years ago, the now-ubiquitous drink didn’t appear in the United States until the latter years of the 16th century. Virginian colonists, likely nostalgic for the alcoholic staple available in pubs everywhere back in England, looked to their corn crops as a possible source for libation creation.  They began to brew the first-recorded American ales, and in the early years of the 17th century, the first brewery in the New World would appear in what was then called “New Amsterdam,” now known as “Manhattan.”

Sadly, neither this brewhouse nor the others that would spring up throughout the next hundred years or so are still in operation. However, the brewing company of D.G. Yuengling & Son would be the first to buck this trend. Founded in 1829 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Yuengling has been in operation for nearly 200 years! The company is as strong as ever, as well: in 2018, they placed at #1 in the Brewers Association’s list of the top 50 craft brewing companies in America.

Yuengling may be the longest-surviving brewery in America, but their competition has grown since their earliest days. As of 2019, there are over 7,000 breweries that produce beer in the United States; they range in size from industry giants like MillerCoors to smaller brew-pubs and microbreweries. Currently, California hosts the greatest number of craft breweries, with more than 750 independent breweries that can call the Golden State their home. Regardless of where they live, though, on National American Beer Day, people across the country will toast to their favorite American beers, possibly with a glass of it in hand.

What is National American Beer Day?

National American Beer Day is observed by beer drinkers across the nation every year on October 27. Though Americans love a good pint of Guinness, a chilled Heineken, or a bubbling Corona, they’ll set aside imports of all kinds on National American Beer Day to instead celebrate distinctly domestic lagers and ales brewed across the country.

Five Reasons Why October Is The Pinkest Month

  1. Breast cancer doesn't discriminate

Although breast cancer is more prevalent among American white women, African-American women tend to die from the disease more often.

  2. Breast cancer can baffle scientists

Scientists don't really understand why the left breast seems to develop cancer more often than the right breast.

  3. Breast cancer surgery was a trailblazer

The very first operation to use anesthesia to deaden pain was a breast cancer surgery.

  4. Men get it too

Overall, only one percent of American males are diagnosed with breast cancer, but African-American men just like women in their community, are more prone to die from the disease.

  5. Breast cancer — the nuns' disease

At one time, breast cancer was called "the nuns' disease" because it seemed to afflict more nuns than women in the general population.

Dysautonomia Awareness Month 2021

Tip: Black Friday 2021 Apple Airpods Sales: Black Friday 2021 Apple Airpods Coupons & Deals

Dysautonomia is a term that you may never have heard about before, and that’s why Dysautonomia Awareness Month is so important! The purpose of this occasion is to increase the support that people with this condition receive in their communities, as well as lowering diagnostic delays. Read on to discover more about Dysautonomia Awareness Month and why it is so important.

Dysautonomia is a term that is used to describe a number of different conditions that have an impact on the autonomic nervous symptom. It can come in many different forms, yet the key here is that the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is impacted. The ANS is imperative because it plays a number of key roles, including moderating the heart rate, keeping blood pressure steady, regulating breathing patterns, and maintaining a constant internal temperature. It is also involved in excretion, sexual arousal, and pupil dilation.

Fast Facts About Dysautonomia

  • There is no single treatment that can address all Dysautonomias.
  • The most common sort of Dysautonomias is neurocardiogenic syncope, which results in fainting. Millions of people around the world are impacted by this.
  • Primary Dysautonomia tends to be due to a degenerative disease or it is inherited.
  • Secondary Dysautonomias typically happen because of another injury or condition.
  • There are approximately 15 different types of Dysautonomia.

History Of Dysautonomia Awareness Month

The first Dysautonomia Awareness Month was launched in October, 2012 by Dysautonomia International. Since then, more than 1,250 awareness activities have taken place all over the world. The color turquoise has been attributed to the month, and so one way that a lot of people show their support for dysautonomia is by wearing a turquoise ribbon on their clothing throughout October. This is also a great way to raise awareness because you can be sure that a lot of people will ask you why you are wearing such a ribbon, and this will give you the opportunity to explain that it is to raise awareness for dysautonomia and why this is important.

Observing Dysautonomia Awareness Month

There are a number of different ways that you can observe Dysautonomia Awareness month. For example, why not host a fundraising benefit? There are plenty of different ways that you can raise money and get lots of people involved. A classic bake sale never fails! After all, who doesn’t love a good slice of cake? From 5k runs and walks to yoga classes in your local park; the list is endless. All you need is something fun that plenty of people can get involved in. You then have the perfect recipe for raising awareness and donations! If you want to do something on a smaller scale, amongst family and friends, you can do a fundraising dinner or cook-off. You don’t have to do something on a community scale. We know that this is a massive undertaking, and every little bit definitely helps!

Here are some simple fundraising tips that can help you with this…

  • Put together a list of potential donors, from co-workers to your friends and family members.
  • Set a goal for your fundraising and continue to work toward it, and raise it. Whenever you are getting close, raise your goal some more. This will inspire you to keep working hard and achieving.
  • Rather than sending emails, send handwritten letters first for a personal touch.
  • Remember your inspiration – Dysautonomia.
  • Use online fundraising tools to help you. There are some great tools out there that are going to help you to manage your fundraising efforts more effectively.
  • Make it personal. People will donate because you are the one that is asking them to do so. Therefore, communicate your passion to people. This is a vital part of your fundraising success.
  • You also need to make sure that you follow-up. It is common for a lot of people to put things off. Rather than simply ignoring you, they have probably got busy, as they have a lot of responsibilities on their plate. A simple reminder can make a massive difference.
  • Send Thank You notes. It is important that people realize just how much you appreciate their efforts. Sending a note thanking someone for their donation and/or their effort can make them feel special and it will make them more inclined to help again in the future. After all, the effort to raise funds and awareness for Dysautonomia is a never-ending one.

It is also worth pointing out that there are many events that are going on around the world throughout October, many of which have been set up by Dysautonomia International, so it’s worth looking on their website to see if there are any in your area. This includes everything from educational courses to light celebrations, with some even starting at the end of September running right through until the start of November. Check these out every year to see if there is something going on near you!

Of course, there is no better way to observe Dysautonomia Awareness month than by raising some awareness. There are lots of different ways you can do this. Something as small as sharing some posts on Dysautonomia on your social media pages can make a massive difference. You will find lots of content and infographics online that can easily be shared with your friends and followers. This is a great way to get the message out and to spread the knowledge. You can also spend the day enhancing your own knowledge. There are lots of great resources online and books about the condition, so why not dedicate a portion of your day to reading these and finding out more about Dysautonomia?

As mentioned earlier, the color turquoise has become associated with this month, and you will find some great turquoise graphic downloads on the Dysautonomia International website. You can download these graphics for use on your website or social media profiles. You can also print them off and place them around the office, for example. It is an easy and effective way to spread the word.

Listicles National Chiropractic Month 2021

5 Tips For A Pain-Free Back

  1. Work on Your Posterior Core

Your core comprises both abdominal and back muscles. Generally, most people have stronger abdominal muscles. Spend more time on the muscles in your back when you are at the gym.

  2. Practice Endurance Over Strength

Focus on getting more repetitions out of your back exercises than increasing the weight your are lifting. The "plank," an isometric core exercise, is a great way to strengthen the muscles in your back.

  3. Try the "Hip Hinge" Instead

When you're bending down to lift something, make it a point to do the "hip hinge" while keeping your back straight. When you avoid bending your back, you will avoid most back injuries.

  4. Wear Better Shoes

Shoes help your body and spine stay aligned. They should fit nicely around your heel without being too tight, to avoid a bad walking or standing posture.

  5. Get Up From Your Desk Regularly

Your lower spine is three times more stressed when you are sitting, compared to standing. Long periods of continued sitting can lead to chronic back conditions. Take a break from work every 30 minutes or so. Even a quick walk is enough.

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month History

History of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

No one knows the exact number of dogs that find safe harbor and temporary housing in community animal shelters each year. But these shelters are the last hope for an estimated 3.3 – 4.5 million misunderstood, unwanted, abused, or neglected dogs in need of a fresh start with a compassionate human friend.

But lost, abandoned or unwanted dogs have not always had shelters where caring humans provide help and hope. As we celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, we would be remiss to not recognize the founder of America’s first animal shelter, Mrs. Caroline Earl White. Mrs. White and a group of 30 female animal rights activists formed the “Women’s Humane Society” in 1869 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Society’s initial mission focused on advocating for the humane treatment of carriage horses on city streets. Horses were considered beasts of burden for industrial purposes at the time, and carriage horses were often seen being treated harshly on city streets, frequently denied access to clean water and medical care.

After success in advocating for more humane treatment of horses, the women turned their attention later that year to smaller domestic animals when they opened a shelter where lost dogs could be found and reclaimed by their owners or placed in new homes. As their commitment to cause continued, the Women’s Humane Society began the first formal educational program about the humane treatment of animals. In 1909 they raised enough money to open and support a dispensary where owners could bring their dogs and other small animals for medical attention.

The determination and commitment to animal rights by Mrs. White and her band of animal activists paved the way for dogs to be treated humanely some 50 years before these women could even vote. Their original shelter, which opened as “The Women’s Branch of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,” is still in operation today as the “Women’s Animal Center” in Bensalem, a suburb of Philadelphia.

Today there are approximately 5,000 community animal shelters nationwide and perhaps as many as 10,000 when including rescue groups and animal sanctuaries in the count. Knowing there are so many places of refuge for unwanted dogs gives us hope that every dog in every shelter will be adopted into a loving permanent home during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

October is the month every year when we turn our hearts toward the hopeful dogs waiting to find forever homes during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) sponsors and promotes Adopt a Shelter Dog Month every October, while the American Humane Society has celebrated a month-long October campaign encouraging the adoption of shelter dogs in 1981. Community shelters make it a priority to match each dog with a compatible owner and environment to support the dog’s best second chance at a loving and stable forever home.

Why Do We Celebrate National Non-GMO Month?

National Non-GMO Month Activities

  1. Find a participating grocery store near you

Look for savings on Verified products, free educational materials, and special events. Support your local retailers by shopping at their locations, and thank them for being part of Non-GMO Month. Choosing Non-GMO Project Verified products has a positive impact on the entire food supply chain.

  2. Host or attend an event (safely, of course)

Consider hosting a Non-GMO Month event in your town or check out your local store’s events. One powerful but simple idea: host a film screening at home or via video chat. Invite friends to watch any of the great films documenting the impacts of genetically modified foods, and serve Non-GMO Project Verified snacks.

  3. Find a participating grocery store near you

Look for savings on Verified products, free educational materials, and special events. Support your local retailers by shopping at their locations, and thank them for being part of Non-GMO Month. Choosing Non-GMO Project Verified products has a positive impact on the entire food supply chain.

Why We Love National Non-GMO Month

  1. It promotes awareness and a healthier food system

Protecting and building a non-GMO food supply is critical to preserving the biodiversity of our agricultural system. Responsible for North America’s most trusted third party verification and labeling for non-GMO food and products, the Non-GMO project also educates consumers and the food industry to help build awareness about GMOs and their impact on our health and food systems.

  2. It helps reduce the impact to the planet

Industrial agriculture relies on substantial chemical inputs that cost mother earth dearly. Since the introduction of GMO crops, there has been a fifteenfold increase in the use of glyphosate. The Non-GMO Project works to counteract this scary trend.

  3. It keeps people informed of the ever changing GMO world

Over 80% of conventional processed foods contain GMOs. With products created from new genetic engineering techniques flooding the marketplace, educating the public about new GMOs is a big part of what the Non-GMO Project does.

Tip: Audio Advice promo codes: Audio Advice Free 2-Day Shipping All US Orders

October is Non-GMO Month, a chance to raise awareness about how choosing non-genetically modified foods can promote a healthy diet and sustainable agricultural practices. This year, the Non-GMO Project is partnering with Fairtrade America—two great non-profits that are working to build a better food system for people and the planet. To help them celebrate and promote their mission to fix industrial agriculture look for the non-GMO Butterfly and the Fair Trade farmer on all your favorite groceries. And tell your favorite grocery store staff how much you appreciate having the choice to vote with your dollars for a better way.

This year, the Non-GMO Project is paying particular attention to the essential role retailers have played during the pandemic: they’re sending out branded, organic cotton face masks to retailers across the country. The importance of transparency and labeling in our food system underscores the overwhelming need for the Non-GMO Project seal, solidifying the essential connection between the people who grow the food and the people who eat the food.

Feral Cat Day 2021

Tip: Pets Coupons: Pets Coupons, Sales & Deals October 2021

If the internet is any judge, everyone loves a cat, well… Unless it’s a stray cat, at which point the tropes involve more back-alley caterwauling and boots being thrown at yowling cats on fences. Feral Cat Day is here to remind us of our love of the furry-little devils, and how every stray cat has within them a loving cuddle-able furball looking for a foreverhome.

History of Feral Cat Day

To talk about the history of Feral Cat Day one must first discuss the history of the cat. In the grand scheme of things cats have been domesticated nearly as long as dogs, and have been living alongside us for over 10,000 years. There isn’t a place in the world that one can’t find cats in homes, and colonies of cats living in every nook and cranny of human cities. It’s no surprise either, we generate a lot of waste, and by extension attract a lot of vermin, vermin which these natural predators love to chase, catch, and eat.

In August of 2001, Alley Cat Allies celebrated their 10th anniversary, and launched the first annual Feral Cat Day to promote raising awareness about feral cat colonies and how to care for, and prevent them. Alley Cat Allies is a strong supporter of the ‘Trap-Neuter-Return’ policy, where stray cats are captured and brought in to local volunteer veterinarians to be neutered and returned to the streets. This allows the cats to live out their lives on the streets, without creating more kittens to perpetuate the problem.

How to celebrate Feral Cat Day

Feral Cat Day is best celebrated by alerting people the various issues facing stray cats. Most cities currently catch and impound cats in shelters, briefly attempting to get them adopted before ultimately euthanizing them. Instead you can educate others about organizations like Alley Cat Allies, and the Trap-Neuter-Return policy that saves the cats lives while preventing future generations.

You can also begin participating in a stray cat capture program, organizing with a local group to create a Trap-neuter-Return effort of your very own.

An easily overlooked but incredibly effective method of celebrating is nothing more than getting your own cats neutered to ensure that unwanted kittens will not be born into the world. You too can take part in ensuring that society changes the way it thinks about stray cats, and help to create compassionate communities for house cats and stray cats alike.

Please note – Feral Cat Day has become Alley Cat Allies’ Global Cat Day. This is a permanent change that will also be in effect for Oct. 16, 2018 and for every year thereafter.

National Spina Bifida Awareness Month History

History of National Spina Bifida Awareness Month

Spinal defects have existed since the beginnings of mankind. Anthropologists have uncovered many depictions in statues and artifacts from ancient civilizations of people young and old with malformed spinal cords. In the Classical Period of the Greek physician Hippocrates, descriptive writings revealed such defects, though they didn’t have the proper medical science and tools to heal them at the time.

The first description of a spina bifida case was by Nicolas Tulp in 1653. Tulp proposed the term and described it as a vertebral anomaly and it was considered a duplication of the spinous process of the vertebra. Spina Bifida was first found in the textbook Observationes Medicae, written by Tulp, with descriptions of six Spina Bifida cases. One illustration showed a Spina Bifida case of a child with a large lumbar level myelomeningocele defect.

From the early 1600s to the mid-1800s, surgeons attempted to treat Spina Bifida to no avail. Despite this, they continued their research and approached the defect with new techniques, draining or injecting solutions into the sac. Mortality rates fell, but patient debilitation was still the end result. In the middle of the nineteenth century, Dr. James Morton used an iodine and glycerine solution for injection into the sac and this technique proved successful.

In 1973, the Spina Bifida Association of America was formed in Chicago Illinois and it was primarily used as a source of information for its chapters and members. They enabled children with spina bifida to live longer by using new treatments and diagnostic tools that helped families affected by it. As time goes on, the month of October is named as its official month and in the twenty-first century, events and fundraisers have increased in the ongoing battle to better treat spina bifida.

Tip: Baby Monitors Sales: Baby Monitors Deals and Coupons October 2021

There are hundreds of thousands of people who have Spina Bifida, and throughout the month of October, we celebrate National Spina Bifida Awareness Month to raise awareness and support for them. Spina Bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly. This neural tube becomes the baby’s brain, spinal cord, and the tissues that enclose them. Spina bifida occulta or “hidden” spina bifida doesn’t cause any disabilities and it doesn’t appear until later in life. Typically, there’s a gap in the baby’s back instead of an opening and there’s no damage to the spinal cord or the nerves.

Listicles Italian-American Heritage Month 2021

5 Ways Italians Changed American History

  1. America’s name is Italian inspired

Amerigo Vespucci, who explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and 1502, is the source of the name "America."

  2. An Italian explorer discovered the New World

Christopher Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as the island later called Hispaniola.

  3. An Italian first mapped the East coast

Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first European to map the Atlantic coast of today's United States.

  4. The Declaration of Independence has Italian inspiration

Filippo Mazzei, a physician and promoter of liberty, was a close friend and confidant of Thomas Jefferson. He published a pamphlet containing the phrase "All men are by nature equally free and independent."

  5. The pope helped Italian immigrants

To assist immigrants in the U.S., Pope Leo XIII dispatched a contingent of priests and nuns. Among them was Sister Francesca Cabrini, who founded schools, hospitals, and orphanages.

Black Cat Awareness Month 2021

Tip: Cabela's Canada coupon codes: Cabela's Canada Free Shipping Sitewide

There are many superstitions surrounding the feline with sable fur, and the one stating that your luck is going to have a downward turn if you have one walk in front of you is the most prevalent. We would like to remind you, however, that Groucho Marx has the right of it. All it means when a black cat walks in front of you is that the animal is clearly going somewhere, and should either be pet, fed treats, or left well enough alone. None of these choices is going to have an effect on your luck, one way or another, and that’s just one message being touted by International Black Cat Awareness Month.

History of International Black Cat Awareness Month

The creation of International Black Cat Awareness Month came about after it’s creator, Layla Morgan Wilde, noticed that while there are two days dedicated to black cats in the world (One in the UK, one in the US) there wasn’t anything dedicated to them on a national level. Such an observation is desperately needed, as superstitions surrounding black cats had gotten so out of control that shelters won’t even adopt them out during October any longer. Too often the cats were being adopted as part of the Halloween holiday mystique, and would be abandoned or worse after the holiday passed.

Throughout the rest of the year, it’s typically more difficult to get them adopted, how much more difficult? Black cats are adopted at a rate 50% lower than any other color of cat, which we can’t understand at all. A sable furred cat is perhaps one of the most beautiful animals to walk the earth.

How To Celebrate International Black Cat Awareness Month

The first and best way is to do your part in dispelling the myths surrounding black cats and their supposed luck-altering abilities. If you’re going to a shelter to adopt a kitten, consider adopting a black kitten to ensure they find their way into a good home, and if it’s a black kitten with special needs so much the better! (Special needs cats get adopted at rates below that of even healthy black kittens, so special needs black kittens are especially in need of love!) Bringing the love of a new black furbaby in your life, or helping another one get adopted, is the best celebration they could hope for.

German-American Heritage Month History

History of German-American Heritage Month

In October 1683 German families began settling in Pennsylvania. Since then, German Americans have contributed greatly to our society. As well as the already mentioned Easter Bunny and Santa, the Germans have had a huge influence in car manufacturing, the building of churches, the arts, and even the language. Love a good hamburger? That came from Hamburg in Germany. Hugely historical entrepreneurs such as Heinz, Chrysler, Boeing, and Rockefeller all have German American heritage.

The first proclamation of German-American Heritage Month was issued by Ronald Reagan in October 1987, and since then we have been celebrating every year.

Emotional Wellness Month History

History of Emotional Wellness Month

With our hectic schedules, devices pinging us from every direction, and modern life becoming increasingly uncertain, it’s more crucial than ever to maintain a sense of calm and balance. Emotional Wellness Month, observed all October, reminds us to disconnect and take a time out for our brain.

Maintaining a healthy emotional balance helps us make healthy choices, have good relationships, and achieve our goals. Emotional wellness gives us a toolkit for handling life’s stresses, navigating relationships, and keeping ourselves motivated. Mindfulness, a simple but powerful concept inspired by Eastern meditation traditions, is a useful way to practice engaging in the present, accepting events and feelings without judgment, and moving through life with calm and ease.

Did you know good sleep and a healthy diet can have powerful effects on your emotions? If you’re feeling depressed or anxious, make sure you’re getting proper rest and eating nutritious food. Consider your relationship to yourself and your loved ones. Do you feel confident and optimistic about your future? Do you have good communication with those you care about? Are you able to express your feelings and process difficult times in a healthy way?

High levels of stress can lead to physical complications like high blood pressure, headaches, and even chronic conditions like diabetes. If you’re having a hard time enjoying life or experiencing the physical symptoms of high stress, talk to your doctor or a therapist who can guide you toward activities and treatment options that can help you feel like yourself again.

Did you know your emotional well-being has powerful effects on your overall health? Mental and emotional stress can translate into negative physical reactions, a weakened immune system, and poor health.

“Emotional wellness” refers to our ability to process feelings in a healthy, positive way and manage the stress of everyday life. If you feel stressed or overwhelmed, try a soothing activity like meditation or yoga to slow down and clear your mind.

Use Emotional Wellness Month as an opportunity to take charge of your emotional wellness, find the soothing activities that work for you, and, most of all, breathe!

Fire Prevention Month 2021

Tip: Los Angeles Zoo And Botanical Gardens coupon codes: Los Angeles Zoo And Botanical Gardens Promo Codes, Coupons October 2021

According to the National Fire Protection Association, seven people die every day from home fires on average, taking more lives each year than all other natural disasters in the U.S. Fire Prevention Month helps educate families about the dangers of fires, how easy it can be for fires to start, and how much easier it can be to prevent them.

As a popular holiday, Fire Prevention Month gives people the chance to learn how they can make their lives safer while also learning about the history of national fire emergencies.

History of Fire Prevention Month

Similar to Fire Prevention Week, Fire Prevention Month memorializes the Great Chicago Fire, a fire that desolated the city of Chicago and has left over 100,000 homeless in October of 1871.

The National Fire Protective Association sponsors this month-long observance as a way to teach parents and children how to prevent fires in their own homes and learn what to do when a fire occurs.

Chicago has made improvements on fire prevention policies throughout the city since that incident, including more full roads, easier access to the fire hydrants, and better home conditions.

All October, families get to learn about better ways to prevent fires, including methods such as inspecting your heat sources, maintain your electrical cords and updating your smoke alarms.

This monthly holiday began during the early 1900s, wherein 1922; the National Fire Protection Association sponsored Fire Prevention Week as a way to prevent events like this from happening. This sister holiday was approved by President Calvin Coolidge, who proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance in 1925.

How to Celebrate Fire Prevention Month

Here are some ways that you can participate in Fire Prevention Month: Develop a fire escape plan with everyone in your household and practice it at least twice a year. Install smoke alarms in your home, on every level, and outside each sleeping area.

Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year if required. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what they should do if they hear one. Make sure all household members know two ways to escape from every room.

Establish a family meeting spot outside. You can also help others understand this tips by sharing this holiday on your favorite social media websites using the hashtag #firepreventionmonth.

Community shelters make it a priority to match each dog with a compatible owner and environment to support the dog’s best second chance at a loving and stable forever home.

Almost eight in 10 Americans have an episode of lower back pain at some point in their lives. Chronic back pain can result in lowered productivity, which can adversely affect your earning potential — not to mention your quality of life. Often, pain-killing opioids are prescribed as a quick-fix solution. Excessive use of opioids can be detrimental to your health. National Chiropractic Month, observed every October, emphasizes alternative methods of treatment, which yield better results.

Healthy Lung Month History

History of Healthy Lung Month

Lung health has been a concern throughout human history and a phenomenon that has intrigued doctors, health workers, and scientists. Diseases such as tuberculosis, the flu, and many other airborne ailments have been around for a long time, looming over societies like a deadly blanket.

Tuberculosis, or TB, has been among the most prominent lung diseases in history, with traces of it even being found in ancient Egyptian mummies. It was tuberculosis that prompted the start of the American Lung Association in 1904.

More recently anti-smoking movements have joined in the healthy lung movement. Cigarette packaging warnings were established in 1966 and years of campaigning have  successfully led to the change in perception of smoking among the American public, with Americans now realizing smoking is a major cause of cancer.

Lung disease affects a huge number of Americans. Around 10 million are diagnosed with chronic bronchitis each year, 25 million are believed to be living with asthma, and over 150,000 die from lung cancer annually. Our lungs are important and Healthy Lung Month is an opportunity to create awareness around healthy lifestyle choices.

Fire Prevention Week 2021

Fires can be powerful and dangerous, especially when lives are at stake. Most rely on their firefighters, those who volunteer to risk their lives every day to save people and stop the fires from spreading. However, most would not know how to prevent fires or protect themselves in the case of a fire happening. That’s where Fire Prevention Week comes in.

History of Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, a fire that devastated the city of Chicago by burning down over 1,000 buildings, leaving over 100,000 homeless and 300 killed in October of 1871. The story that everyone tells of the Great Chicago Fire is that “Mrs. O’ Reily’s cow kicked over the lantern” and that’s what started the fire. Although the fire was started in that area, historians aren’t sure that how it began. However, what they do know is that the Great Chicago Fire kept spreading because the firefighters could not control the embers blowing in the wind. All of the building during that time were made of wood, the city was suffering a massive drought, and many of the firefighters were drained of resources due to previous fires weeks before.

Thus, in 1922, the National Fire Protection Association, which began in 1896 as a response to these fires, sponsored Fire Prevention Week as a way to prevent events like this from happening. President Calvin Coolidge then proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance in 1925, officially declaring it a national holiday. Today, because of the event, Chicago has strict guidelines on how buildings are built and how roads are expanded and given maintenance. Fire Prevention Week thus is taught and observed in schools all over the country, especially for younger children, so that way they can be able to handle what to do when a fire starts.

Blindness Awareness Month History

History of Blindness Awareness Month

Blindness Awareness Month launched in October 2009 from The Little Rock Foundation, an organization in Voorhees, New Jersey, dedicated to serving families with blind or visually impaired children. Tina and Rocco Fiorentino formed The Little Rock Foundation one year after the birth of their child, Rocco, who was born four months premature and blind. As Ambassador for The Little Rock Foundation, Rocco has shown the world blindness doesn’t prevent people from living life to the fullest.

Blindness Awareness Month seeks to accomplish many things:

  • Education: Companies around the world teach the public about good eye health and the latest research and innovations in the treatment of eye disorders.
  • Inspiration: Stories are shared about blind or visually impaired people accomplishing incredible things most sighted people do not attempt.
  • Advocacy: Organizations garner support for more resources, research, access, and laws that enable people with visual impairments to live fully productive lives and contribute equally to their communities.

There is no shortage of ways to learn about, celebrate, and support the visually impaired community throughout Blindness Awareness Month.

Every October, Blindness Awareness Month brings a heightened focus on the blind and visually impaired community and the realities of living without sight. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “everyone, if they live long enough, will experience at least one eye condition in their lifetime”. The proof is in the numbers. An estimated 2.2 billion people around the globe suffer from some form of visual impairment or blindness – including everyone who simply wears corrective lenses. One billion of these cases could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed. So, we should all understand how to maintain optimal eye health and how to navigate life with visual impairments, whether for ourselves or loved ones. Read on to learn how you can observe, celebrate, and advocate during Blindness Awareness Month.

Global Diversity Awareness Month History

History of Global Diversity Awareness Month

After the Second World War, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly at the Palais de Chaillot, in Paris. The Declaration represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. It is essentially an acknowledgment that we should remember and understand the value of each human being, regardless of their nationality, color, race, sex, gender, country of origin, language, or otherwise.

As the world becomes more and more connected and globalized, it’s important to remember that a ‘global monoculture’, or a homogenization of cultures, kills off traditional cultures and unique traits of people. Embracing cultural diversity – in all aspects of life – is the answer to avoiding a global monoculture. The phrase ‘cultural diversity’ can also refer to having different cultures respect each other’s differences.

Although its origins are difficult to trace, Global Diversity Awareness Month represents the perfect opportunity for you to learn more about new cultures, and explore some of the diversity that makes the world such a wonderful place.
